Phytosterols ( inc. sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol )
Clinical Chemistry
Description
Indications
Phytosterolaemia ( sitosterolaemia ) is a very rare inherited sterol storage disease characterized by tendon and tuberous xanthomas, haemolytic episodes, arthralgias and arthritis, and premature coronary and aortic atherosclerosis. Affected individuals have very high levels of plasma plant sterols ( sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol ). Increased intestinal absorption and decreased hepatic excretion of sitosterol ( the major plant sterol ) may be responsible for the accumulation of these non-cholesterol sterols in plasma and tissues of affected patients.
Sample Type
Plasma, Lithium Heparin, minimum 1 mL. Serum, SST/Gel also acceptable.
Turnaround Time
Within 7 weeks
External Notes
Quantitation of Campesterol, Stigmasterol and Sitosterol included. Sent to: Department of Clinical Chemistry, Sheffield Children's Hospital
