Sheffield Laboratory Medicine

Sheffield Laboratory Medicine supports the care of patients across the UK, conducting over 14 million tests a year. We provide a repertoire of over 650 routine and specialist laboratory tests to patients in all settings. Our state-of-the-art laboratory provides leading edge diagnostic services conducted by highly trained, skilled and specialised scientific staff.

We are a UKAS accredited medical laboratory No. 8491, 9805, 8508, 8509, 8494, testing laboratory No. 1837. We pride ourselves in delivering the most technologically advanced and accurate test results within a rapid timeframe.

We underpin almost every aspect of patient care, from diagnostic testing and treatment advice to using cutting-edge genetic technologies and preventing disease. We provide a vast array of laboratory tests to NHS and private patients across primary, secondary and tertiary care. Through our state of the art technology and highly trained, skilled and specialised scientific staff, our laboratories are some of the largest and busiest in the UK.

Our repertoire of tests is spread across a number of specialist services including Cellular Pathology, Microbiology, Virology, Clinical Chemistry (including Toxicology), Immunology (including Proteins) and Haematology encompassing Blood Transfusion and Coagulation.

Our Coagulation department is a Haemophilia Reference Centre is designated as an International Haemophilia Training Centre. We respond to 4 million urgent requests e.g. supporting essential emergency care pathways. Our Clinical Chemistry service hosts one of the 3 Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Services in the UK and Immunology hosts one of the 2 national Protein Reference Units. Histopathology incorporates routine and specialist Histology including Neuropathology, Diagnostic Cytology, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Mortuary and Autopsy services. In addition, we also host services such as the UK National External Quality Assessment Service (NEQAS) and North of England Pathology and Screening Education Centre.

The services we provide can be broadly divided into 4 core areas, these being; Diagnostics, Prognostics, Screening and Long Term Condition Management. Sheffield Laboratory Medicine serves its host Trust (Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and the wider local area along with primary care in a surrounding population of over 1.5 million plus a significant amount of commercial and clinical trial testing. In addition, we provide specialist and highly specialist services on a national and international level to a large number of external customers.

Phospholipase A2 Receptor antibodies (PLA2R ab)

PLA2R antibodies are used for the diagnosis and monitoring of primary membranous glomerulonephritis and may be an alternative to renal biopsy. PLA2R are expressed on podocytes in the kidney. Binding of PLA2R antibody causes immune complex deposition and damage along the glomerular basement membrane resulting in proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome. PLA2R antibodies are elevated in active disease and fall during remission and can be used to monitor treatment.

Thrombospondin Type-1 Domain Containing 7A antibodies.

Thrombospondin antibodies can be seen in primary membranous glomerulonephritis and are a useful marker in the 2.5-10% of individuals with primary membranous glomerulonephritis where the PLA2R antibody is negative. Thrombospondin is present within podocytes in the kidney and binding of thrombospondin antibodies causes damage to the glomerular basement membrane in a similar way to PLA2R antibodies.

Blood Borne Virus (BBV) Testing

The early detection of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV is essential to improve patient outcomes and prevent disease transmission. Screening for these viruses is promoted in many settings including antenatal clinics, substance misuses services, sexual health clinics and prisons. Sceening of blood samples for Hepatitis B, C and HIV with follow-up confirmation tests is available via tracked automation..

ADAMTS-13 Testing

A rapid and responsive 24/7 ADAMTS13 service for the differential diagnosis of Thrombotic Thrombocytopaenia Purpura (TTP). The ADAMTS 13 activity assay is available with a 2 hour turnaround time from receipt of sample at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital site at all times, and is followed up with assay of inhibitors to differentiate immune and congenital TTP.
