Description

Serum albumin is often measured as part of liver function (LFT) or calcium/bone profiles. Albumin accounts for 55-60% of total body protein and has a half-life of approximately 20 days. It contributes to oncotic pressure of the plasma and has a role in the transport and storage of substances (including drugs) around the body.

Indications

Forms part of a liver function profile, although has limited value in assessing liver function. Required for interpretation of calcium. Around 50% of calcium is bound to albumin; therefore total calcium concentrations are adjusted for albumin concentration. May be used in oedematous states and suspected nephrotic syndrome to identify low albumin as the cause. Albumin is not useful for assessment of nutritional state.

Serum. SST/Gel, minimum 2 mL (1 mL separated serum). Take blood with minimum stasis time.
