Alkaline Phosphatase Isoenzymes

Clinical Chemistry

Description

Alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes are used to identify the source of a raised alkaline phosphatase when aetiology is uncertain. Please note, interpretation can be difficult if total ALP activity is only slightly elevated. Fasting samples are preferred. Some patients with blood group O or B may have increased ALP activity after meals (intestinal form).

Indications

Raised total ALP without clear cause. If bone disease is suspected, measurement of specific markers of bone turnover may be more appropriate. In children and adolescents, please check that ALP is truly increased above the age-related reference range before requesting this test.

Sample Type

Serum, SST/Gel. Minimum 2 mL (1 mL separated serum)

Reference Range

Reference ranges are provided on the report. Alternatively, please contact the laboratory for current ranges.

Turnaround Time

Within 3 weeks

Testing Frequency

Fortnightly
