CD34 Enumeration

Haematology

Description

CD34+ stem cells are mobilised into the peripheral circulation by the action of GCSF in patients undergoing a stem cell harvesting procedure. The CD34+ result is used to predict whether there are sufficient circulating stem cells to provide a suitable yield if the stem cell harvesting procedure is performed and to estimate the length of time that the apheresis procedure will take to collect the required number of stem cells.

Indications

Patients or healthy donors undergoing a stem cell harvesting procedure

Sample Type

Whole blood (EDTA 4.0 ml Lavender).

Reference Range

Not applicable.

Turnaround Time

2 hours from sample receipt for prearranged requests.

Testing Frequency

Daily (Monday-Friday)

External Notes

CD34 enumeration is not performed if the white cell count is less than 1.0 x109/l.

Patient Preparation

The peripheral blood sample needs to be taken before the harvesting procedure commences
