Indications

Elevated serum amylase of unknown aetiology. When the urine amylase result and the amylase/creatinine clearance ratio (ACCR) does NOT suggest macroamylase, samples can be sent away to distinguish between pancreatic and salivary amylase. In some cases amylase electrophoresis is also required to establish whether there is macroamylasaemia (if amylase/creatinine clearance ratio does not provide an answer).
