Amyloid A Protein, SAA
Immunology
Description
Serum amyloid A is an acute phase reactant comprised of a group of polymorphic apolipoproteins, synthesised by hepatocytes and Kupfer Cells [1]. However extrahepatic tissue cellular expression is widely documented. In the plasma it predominately associates with high-density lipoproteins (HDL) [3]. In the acute phase SAA responds in a similar manner to CRP, but may be more sensitive in situations such as renal transplant rejections. SAA is often elevated in malignant diseases and increasing concentrations may be associated with metastatic spread. SAA is a precursor of Amyloid A fibrils, although serum concentrations of SAA are not predictive of fibril formation [1,2].
