External Notes
Reliable serological tests (IgM or IgG) are not available for enteroviral infections. Good alternative strategy is to attempt to identify the virus by PCR either from the active affected site (eg skin swab for vesicular rashes, throat swabs for respiratory illness, CSF for neurological infections) or EDTA blood for suspected systemic infections. If you have missed the acute phase, you may wish to test a stool sample for PCR as these viruses are shed in the stool for around six weeks.
