Description

Bone marrow aspirate (BMA) morphology is generally performed as part of the investigation of haematological malignancies but may also be required to investigate other causes of bone marrow failure.

BMA smears are stained using May Grunwald Giemsa stain. In addition the Perls’ iron stain is performed to visualise iron stores and identify the presence of ring sideroblasts.

The report includes morphological details of erythropoiesis, granulopoiesis, lymphopoiesis and megakaryopoiesis and where possible a conclusion is offered based on the findings seen. These findings are collated with results from histopathology, genetics and immunophenotyping to reach a final diagnosis and produce an integrated report.

Indications

Patients suspected to have a haematological disorder/malignancy or other condition which may affect bone marrow function / appearances. 

Bone marrow aspirate morphology is generally performed in conjunction with trephine morphology, immunophenotyping and genetic investigations as part of our Haemato-Oncology diagnostic service (HODS).

Sample Type

Bone marrow smears (minimum of 4 containing particles) and peripheral blood smears (x 2). It is ideal to send EDTA (minimum of 1ml, Lavender) BMA and peripheral blood sample in case additional testing is required.

Turnaround Time

Within 7 days. However new or suspected acute leukaemia diagnoses will be prioritised. If required urgently please contact us to discuss. A verbal interim result is usually available within 48 hours from sample receipt.
