External Notes

After removing the catheter in an aseptic manner the last 5 cm should be aseptically removed and placed in an aseptically produced container. Multiple IV lines from the same patient must be properly differentiated and sent in separate containers. If a line infection is suspected, blood cultures through each lumen of the line together with a peripheral sample should be taken. Urinary catheter tips are unsuitable for culture.

Follow standard nursing procedures to obtain sample.
