Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT)

Clinical Chemistry

Description

GGT is an enzyme that catalyses the transfer of -glutamyl groups from a donor ( e.g. peptide ) to an acceptor ( e.g. peptide ). It is present in all cells, except muscle cells, and is primarily membrane-bound.

Indications

GGT can be used to help determine whether a raised alkaline phosphatase ( ALP ) is due to hepatobiliary disease or another source. GGT can also act as a marker for alcohol consumption.
