Chimerism Analysis
Molecular Haematology
Description
The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure allows the study of genetic disease as DNA fragments of interest can be amplified to the extent that it can be analysed directly even from minute amounts of starting material. Mixed chimerism following bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation can be measured and quantified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of variable number of tandem repeat sequences (VNTR) followed by gene scan analysis. It is a useful tool to monitor patients and can help in the prediction of post-transplant relapse. It is also used during the reversal of relapse by donor lymphocyte infusion and immune suppression adjustment.
Indications
Used to monitor engraftment post bone marrow transplantation.
Sample Type
5ml EDTA blood or bone marrow, less than 48 hrs old.
