C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
Clinical Chemistry
Description
CRP is a non-specific acute phase protein that is used to detect and monitor a wide range of inflammatory processes.
CRP typically rises to concentrations of 10 - 40 mg/l in mild inflammation and some viral infections. CRP concentrations between 40 and 200 mg/l reflect acute inflammation or bacterial infection. CRP measurements can be used to infer the presence of bacterial infection when microbiological diagnosis is difficult or too slow for the clinical context.
Please note, CRP should only be requested when the clinical picture is unclear and the result will contribute to patient management. CRP should not be requested again within 24 hours of a previous request.
