External Notes

Samples should be sent to Microbiology, other investigations will be forwarded to the respective departments e.g. Immunology, Virology. Spectroscopy on CSF - Investigation of CSF for Xanthochromia is performed by biochemistry after prior discussion with Clinical Chemistry medical staff. Specimens should be delivered inside a brown envelope ( in the outer specimen bag ) to avoid degradation of the light sensitive bilirubin. The test is not normally available outside normal working hours - discussion would be required with the 'on call' biochemist.

Patient Preparation

Follow standard protocols to obtain specimen.Samples from patients with suspected Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy should be labelled as 'Category 3', the laboratory informed and delivered by hand.
