Haematology


Description

A Cytospin is performed to assess whether there are any Haemopoietic cells present in the specimen. A cytospin is performed and stained with a Romanowsky stain and examined microscopically. If WBC’s are seen morphologically and there is sufficient sample, flow cytometry will be attempted to type the cells

Turnaround Time

24 hours for a verbal result of morphological appearances. 5 working days for validated report if flow cytometry performed.


Testing Frequency

Daily (Monday - Friday)


External Notes

Samples should be ideally be taken during routine hours and should be prepared and stained within 2 hours. If received out of hours, a cytospin will be prepared and stained but morphological examination will not be performed until the next working day. If required more urgently the on call haematology registrar should be contacted to examine the smear and discuss results.


Patient Preparation

Specimens are collected by appropriate medical staff.
