Complete the date and time when the sample has been taken on the request form. Brain smear- prearrange with Neuropathologist or laboratory - fresh biopsy fragment sent immediately to laboratory for smear preparation. Accepted until 5 p.m. Muscle biopsy - prebooked - send fresh tissue loosely wrapped in saline-soaked gauze immediately to laboratory before 3.30pm. If this has occurred the Neuropathologist can offer a preliminary assessment within 1 working day (usually the same day) Sample volume requirement of 2-5ml of CSF should ensure that neither insufficient nor excessive amounts of sample are collected. Delivery before 4pm. Nerve biopsy - fresh tissue sent fresh, laid on smooth card or wrapped in saline soaked gauze, delivered immediately to laboratory before 3.30pm.
