Description
Glucose is a metabolic fuel. The blood concentration in health is maintained in a narrow range by the action of various hormones. High glucose is most often due to diabetes mellitus. Low glucose may be due to a number of causes including; - delayed separation of sample - treatment with insulin or other hypoglycaemic medications - hyperinsulinism (eg. insulinoma) - alcohol and other drugs - endocrinopathies (eg. adrenal or pituitary failure) - chronic liver or kidney disease - sepsis - inherited metabolic disease
Indications
1. Diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes mellitus. 2. Diagnosis and monitoring of hypoglycaemia.
Sample Type
Plasma, (Grey top), for samples taken in the Primary care. Serum (Gold top) for inpatient or outpatient samples transported to lab within 2 hours. Otherwise grey top tube must be used.
