Growth Hormone

Clinical Chemistry

Description

GH is synthesised by the anterior pituitary following stimulation by GHRH (growth-hormone-releasing hormone) and somatostatin. GH stimulates the liver to produce insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which subsequently exerts negative feedback on the pituitary and hypothalamus. GH is important for growth and has many other metabolic actions, including stimulation of lipolysis, protein synthesis and hepatic glucose production.
