Interleukin 6 (IL-6)
Immunology
Description
IL-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in both the initiation and the maintenance of inflammatory and immunological responses [3,4]. It is produced by various cells including monocytes and neutrophils [1,3] and plays a key role in lymphocyte development and function [2,4]. IL-6 has been shown to be actively involved in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic onset idiopathic arthritis, and inflammatory bowl diseases including Crohn's disease [1,2,4]. Patients with conditions that have underlying low level inflammation, including diabetes and obesity may also display raised IL-6 levels, however IL-6 concentration has been shown to increase with age [2]. It has been speculated that increased levels of IL-6 and CRP may be an indicator of cardiac events [4].
