Description

Patients with positive results for M. tuberculosis are an infection control risk


Sample Type

Early morning sputum, urine or other appropriate specimen. Blood can be cultured ( Specific blood culture bottles are required ). Sputum can be tested for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex using PCR to give a same day result after discussion with a Microbiology/Infectious Disease Consultant.

Turnaround Time

AFB Microscopy - >90% within 24-48hrs. Culture 6 weeks - Significant results are reported as soon as practicable

Daily


External Notes

AFB microscopy results can be available in <4 hrs if required. For urine samples, large EMU containers are available from the department. EMU should not be sent as a routine screen - discuss with Microbiology medical staff. For Mycobacterial culture from blood please contact lab for correct bottles. Always give appropriate clinical information.


Patient Preparation

Follow standard nursing procedures to obtain sample.
