Description

Approximately 90% of the organic matrix of bone is type 1 collagen, a helical protein that is cross-linked at the N and C-terminal ends of the molecule. During collagen breakdown, the N terminal telopeptide ( NTX ) fragment is released into the circulation and subsequently cleared by the kidneys.

Indications

Elevated levels of NTx indicate elevated bone resorption. NTx has been shown to predict skeletal response to hormone replacement therapy ( HRT ) in postmenopausal women and to indicate the effect of antiresorptive therapy in postmenopausal women and individuals with Paget's disease. It may be used as an adjunct to PINP for monitoring antiresorptive treatment in situations where PINP is unreliable, eg steroid treatment.

Sample Type

Urine, plain, second morning void. Minimum 2.5 mL. Transport by first class post, avoiding weekends. Store at -20C.
