Oestradiol (E2)

Clinical Chemistry

Description

Oestrogens, including oestradiol, oestrone, oestriol and their conjugates, are steroid hormones that are secreted by a number of tissues in both females and males. In females, oestrogens are primarily secreted by the ovaries, following stimulation by FSH ( follicle-stimulating hormone ), but also by the corpus luteum and placenta. In males, the testes produce small amounts of oestradiol. Oestrogens are responsible for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics, stimulation of ovarian follicle growth in females and play an important role in maintenance of bone density.
