Pancreatic Faecal Elastase-1

Clinical Chemistry

Description

Human pancreatic elastase-1 has a unique structure that resists degradation in the GI tract. The ScheBo elastase assay is a test of pancreatic exocrine function. It is more convenient for patients than the pancreolauryl test and does not require discontinuation of enzyme supplements. At a cut-off of 200 ug/g it was reported to detect most cases of moderate' and severe' pancreatic insufficiency and 20-50% of mild' cases. A result less than 100 ug/g faeces suggests severe pancreatic insufficiency, but patients with other GI diseases (especially if there is diarrhoea) may have low results.

Indications

Suspected exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. This test may not detect all cases of mild pancreatic insufficiency.
