Protein (CSF)

Clinical Chemistry

Description

CSF protein predominantly originates by diffusion from plasma across the blood-CNS barrier ( 80% ) whilst the rest is synthesised within the CNS itself. As CSF is mainly an ultrafiltrate of plasma, the majority of proteins are of low molecular weight ( e.g. albumin, pre-albumin and IgG ).

Indications

Useful in suspected cases of meningitis, brain tumours and infections of the central nervous system.
