Selenium
Clinical Chemistry
Description
Selenium is an essential trace element. Symptomatic deficiency is mainly seen in patients on parenteral nutrition and children with inborn errors of metabolism who require very specialised diets. Acute toxicity can occur with selenous acid ingestion e.g. gun-blueing. Chronic selenium toxicity results in garlic breath odour (also seen with other metals e.g. thallium, arsenic). In addition dermatological changes, gastrointestinal upset and neurological problems may occur.
Indications
Malnutrition with cardiomyopathy, lightening of the hair or alopecia. Routine quarterly monitoring of long term TPN patients. Suspected toxicity.
