Description

In males, testosterone is mainly synthesized in the testis, and is responsible for the development of secondary sex characteristics. In females, it is secreted in small quantities by the adrenal glands and the ovaries, but half comes from peripheral metabolism of prehormones.

Indications

Men: Impotence, gynaecomastia or infertility.
Women: Hirsutism, virilisation, menstrual disturbances or infertility. Also used to monitor topical testosterone HRT in post-menopausal women.
Children: To assess pubertal status e.g. delayed puberty.

Sample Type

Serum. SST/Gel, minimum 2 mL (1 mL separated serum). In men, specimens are best collected at 9am when testosterone levels are highest.
