Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibodies (MOG Antibodies)

Immunology

Description

Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein ( MOG ) is a glycoprotein which is found on the outer membrane surface of the myelin sheath of nerve cells [1]. It is thought to act as a cellular adhesive molecule and regulate stability of the oligodendrocyte microtubules [2]. MOG antibodies cause demyelination of the nerves leading to neurological symptoms that does not meet the typical criteria for Multiple Sclerosis ( MS ). MOG antibody disease is similar in presentation to optic neuritis or transverse myelitis [1]. Patients presenting with symptoms of neuromyelitis optica but are seronegative for NMO antibodies may have MOG antibodies present [1,2,3]. MOG antibodies can also be associated with Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis ( ADEM ) which is more common in children [1]. The disease course can be monophasic or relapsing [2].
