Description

Toxoplasmosis is a widespread infectious disease caused by the protozoa Toxoplasma gondii. Transmission is through ingestion of contaminated food, direct contact with infected domestic animals or in the case of newborns through transplacental infection. Infected healthy adults are generally asymptomatic though mild symptoms such as headache, sore throat and tiredness may be experienced. On rare occasions this can be accompanied by lymphadenopathy.

Testing is on the automated Diasorin Liaison XL analyser using a chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) for the qualitative determination of IgM antibodies and IgG antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii.

Any IgM positive / equivocal results from pregnant patients will be sent to the reference lab for confirmatory testing
