Scientific Lead - Coagulation


Steve started at Sheffield in 1979, becoming Scientific Lead for Coagulation in 2000. During this time he has been instrumental in developing the department into the nationally and internationally recognised centre it is, at the forefront of analytical repertoire and service delivery.

He is co-author on 4 books, 20 book chapters, over 30 guidelines and in excess of 150 peer-reviewed articles. He is also a prolific and engaging presenter at many symposia, conferences and user groups.

Awards presented to Steve across his career include the Inga Marie Nilsson Award and the International Healthcare Volunteer Award (2008 and 2020 respectively), both from the World Federation of Haemophilia, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Anticoagulation in Practice (2014).

In addition he holds the following positions: 

Scientific Director for the UK National External Quality Assessment Scheme for Blood Coagulation (2001 to date)

Director for the World Federation of Haemophilia International External Quality Assessments Schemes for Blood Coagulation (2012 to date)

 Vice President Haemostasis, International Council for Standardisation in Haematology (2016 to date)
