Bart Wagner BSc Biology, Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS) (Special Final Histology and Cytology), IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) in Ultrastructural Pathology

Head of Electron Microscopy (EM) Section - Histopathology

Bart started working at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield in 1979, the year after the opening ceremony took place, as a trainee Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in routine Histopathology.

Electron Microscopy was included as part of his Special Final project ‘an investigation into the nature of in asteroid bodies in sarcoidosis’ which resulted in him providing annual leave cover in EM, and when the incumbent left for promotion in Nottingham, put him in a good position to take over the role of head of the EM section in 1985.

As diagnostic EM units in the city closed and transferred their workloads to him, he acquired skills in examining a wide range of tissues and diseases.

In 1997 he successfully applied for a Bayer sponsored IBMS travel fellowship to visit diagnostic EM units in Vancouver and Professor Feroze Ghadially in Ottawa.

Following on from that visit, the following year he organised a national conference in diagnostic EM in Sheffield which in turn resulted in the formation of the Association of Clinical Electron Microscopists, as ACEM’s meeting secretary he organised the EM satellite meetings to Pathsoc conferences annually until 2019, switching then to be the training and education representative. He has lectured on various topics relating to diagnostic EM at national and international pathology meetings and co-authored over a 100 pathology papers where EM has been included. He is in the process of passing on his knowledge of the subject to the next generation locally via the IBMS DEP in Ultrastructural Pathology, whilst overseeing the routine diagnostic EM workload.
