Consultant Clinical Scientist - Toxicology & Clinical Lead - Clinical Chemistry


Dr Edmund Rab is a Consultant Clinical Scientist working predominantly in Specialised Clinical Chemistry at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. He studied for a Master’s degree in Biological Chemistry at the University of Sheffield and remained at the university to complete a PhD in drug discovery. Whilst he was working on his PhD, he encountered liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Upon completion of his PhD, Dr Rab joined the Scientist Training Programme for Clinical Scientists, training at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

After successfully completing the programme, Dr Rab took up a position in the Department of Specialised Clinical Chemistry and, after completing a year in post, trained for a further 5 years as a Higher Specialist Scientific trainee. During this time, he developed a number of assays for toxicological and endocrinology applications using High Resolution and Tandem Mass Spectrometry. In his current role, Dr Rab oversees the High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) section of the laboratory. He is a member of the team of Duty Toxicologists and writes reports for Coroners across the UK.

Away from toxicology, he is responsible for endocrine liaison and is a member of the Duty Biochemist team.
