Consultant Microbiologist & Clinical Lead - Microbiology


Helena received her medical degree from Sheffield University in 1995 and underwent post graduate medical training at Sheffield Teaching Hospital, Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Chesterfield Royal Hospital before obtaining MRCP and the Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene in 1999.

In 1999 she deferred her training number in Medical Microbiology to undertake a PhD in Pathogenesis of Meningococcal Disease at the University of Sheffield – this was complete in 2002. She completed Microbiology training in 2006 and became a consultant at STH.

Helena is the Operational Lead Infection Control doctor at the Northern General, with a special interest in C. difficile, methicillin susceptible S. aureus infections, antibiotic stewardship and surgical site infections.

She was Training Programme Director for South Yorkshire Medical Microbiology & Virology for Health Education Yorkshire and Humber from 2010-2015. In 2014 she took on the Trust lead for Sepsis. Since 2015 Helena has been Clinical Lead for Microbiology and is enthusiastic about optimising infection services within Laboratory Medicine.

She leads a dynamic team of consultants and trainees to provide outstanding clinical services.
