Senior Biomedical Scientist and Quality Lead - Blood Transfusion


Ruth started out at Airedale General Hospital in 1984, after graduating from the University of Leeds with a BSc (Hons) in Physiology. Following training and state registration she obtained Fellowship of the IBMS and built up considerable experience of working in Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Coagulation.

Ruth has worked at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals since 2002, taking on a Senior Biomedical Scientist role in Blood Transfusion in 2003 and her current role as Blood Transfusion Quality Lead in 2006.

Since then, Ruth has worked with Blood Bank to meet and maintain MHRA requirements for compliance with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005, accreditation standards for CPA and more recently UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189:2012. She has an interest in applying the Human Factors approach to incident investigation.

Over the years, Ruth has developed in the role by completing a postgraduate diploma in Clinical Audit and Effectiveness, the IBMS Quality Management certificate and in 2017, the IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science.
